Based on record, based on impact, based on influence, etc., Dan Gable is the "Greatest" coach in North
American Sports history.
I have always considered Dan Gable to be the "most accomplished" sports PERSON in the history
of the United States regardless of sport.
My criteria are: level of excellence multiplied by length of excellence.
From
the mid 1960s through the end of the 1990s, Dan Gable was at the very top of his sport, first as a wrestler, then as a coach.
I don’t know of any other American sports person who can claim that level of excellence for that length of period.
The
three "most important" sportsmen would be: 1) Jackie Robinson for his strength of character 2) Curt Flood for
his belief in the dignity and rights of an individual 3) Dan Gable for his continued excellence over the greatest period
of time.
I challenge anyone to put together three inviduals who have accomplished more or have had greater impact than
these three have.
