Compare salary increases for Michigan University administrators

April 11, 2011

On March 26, 2011, David Jesse of The Detroit Free Press, published an article detailing the comparative salary increases for administrators at the 15 state of Michigan universities.

Database: Compare salary increases for administrators at 15 state (of Michigan) universities

By DAVID JESSE 10:22 PM, Mar. 26, 2011

http://www.freep.com/article/20110327/NEWS06/110325057/Database-Compare-salary-increases-administrators-15-state-universities?odyssey=mod_sectionstories

I wanted to expand on that data to see how much money was spent on salaries for the athletic departments at the respective institutions.  In addition to the 15 State of Michigan universities, I also added Notre Dame and Ohio State.  Michigan-Flint does not have an athletic department listing on their websight.

I estimated the average annual salary for all athletic department employees to be $75,000.  I do not know how realistic this number is but with so many Assistant/Associate Athletic Directors and coaches, I figured this would be a reasonable average salary.

It should not shock you that Ohio State lists 476 employees in its athletic department followed by:

Notre Dame at 293

Michigan State at 254

Western Michigan at 116

Central Michigan at 112

Eastern Michigan at 105

Oakland University at 87

Wayne State at 76

Saginaw Valley State at 63

Ferris State at 61

Northern Michigan at 53

Michigan Ann Arbor at 42 (it only lists the head coaches.  The total is probably close to Ohio State’s 476)

Grand Valley State at 42

Michigan Tech at 29

Michigan Dearborn at 24

Lake Superior State at 23

Multiply each of those numbers by $75,000 and you can see what each athletic department spends only on salaries.  You can also see why each of these universities charge at least $15,000-$27,000/year just for tuition.  Throw in at least the same amount for room, board and books and you can see why a degree at a four year Michigan public institution of higher learning costs a family around $100,000 per child.

It is hard to understand the obsession people have with college athletics.  When schools such as Michigan State and Note Dame and Ohio State and Michigan admit and charge exorbitant ticket prices to 80,000-100,000 fans on eight Saturdays a year, school administrators must feel that as long as a sucker is born every minute, they will keep the circus going.  As the athletic department expands, the cost of a college education will expand.

Maybe it is time to professional-ize college athletics.  When state college institutions receive as much as $325,000,000 in state funding, and that money only goes to coaches and administrators, something is wrong.  I do not buy into the fact that the students are receiving the cost of tuition.  It costs the same to teach a class of 25 or 50 as it does a class of 26 or 51.

Most classes are being taught by graduate assistants anyway.  I never met a professor yet who taught a 40-hour work week.
