Letter to the Editor: Alabama and Michigan lead the 2011 Wall of Shame for div 1-a college football.

April 26, 2011

Letter to the editor:

Alabama and Michigan lead the 2011 Wall of Shame for div 1-a college football.

There are 120 universities participating in div 1-a college football.

In theory, each school participates in twelve games against div 1-a opponents.  That should equal 1440 scheduled games (divided by two opponents each the actual number of games should be 720).

In reality, one hundred and fifteen schools play a twelve-game regular season. (115 x 12 = 1380 games/2 = 690 contests.

Five schools play a thirteen game regular season.  (5 x 13 = 65/2 32.5 contests).

  1. Tulane                                    Conference USA West
  2. Colorado                              Pacific Twelve Conference
  3. Fresno State                       Western Athletic Conference
  4. Hawaii                                    Western Athletic Conference
  5. New Mexico State                Western Athletic Conference

How can this be?  (690 plus 32.5 equals 722.5).

It seems some of the United States’ esteemed public and private institutions of higher learning, each charging anywhere from $100,000 to $250,000 for a four-year college education (room/board/tuition/books etc.) DO NOT believe that competing in the athletic arena against institutions of similar means is the best way to create respect, integrity and dignity.

Instead, sixty-five div 1-a schools chose to schedule ninety-seven regular season games against div 1-aa opponents.  All ninety-seven of these games will be played at the home of the div 1-a school.

The worst offender is Coach Nick Saban’s Alabama squad of the SEC West conference with four straight to open the season.  Air Force, Buffalo, California, Houston, Idaho and Maryland have three each.  Seventeen schools have two.

  • Thirty-eight of these games are scheduled as the first game of the season.
  • Twenty-one as the second game of the season;
  • Sixteen as the third game of the season;
  • Fourteen as the fourth game of the season;
  • Florida State, North Carolina State, Ohio State (warm-up against Furman in anticipation for their twelfth game vs. Michigan) and Tulsa scheduled their div 1-aa opponent as the eleventh game of the season.

The worst offending conferences are the SEC with sixteen (East with two and West with fourteen), followed by the Atlantic Coast Conference with eleven (Atlantic with seven and Coastal with four) and the Mid-American Conference with eleven (East with seven and West with four).

Let us also look at the number of home games.

In theory, and to compete on a level playing field, each school should have six home games and six away games.

Again, it seems some of the United States’ esteemed public and private institutions of higher learning DO NOT believe that competing in the athletic arena against institutions of similar means is the best way to create respect, integrity and dignity.

Some schools feel no shame when scheduling seven and eight home games versus only four and five away games.

Twelve schools fall into the category of “MOST SHAMEFUL” by scheduling eight home games.

  1. ACC Atlantic                  Maryland
  2. Big East                                 Pittsburgh
  3. Big Ten                                  Illinois
  4. Big Ten                                  Michigan (including five straight to start the season. “Hail to the Victors” is a myth)
  5. Big Ten                                  Wisconsin
  6. Big Twelve S                              Baylor
  7. Big Twelve S                              Texas A&M
  8. Pac Twelve                   Oregon
  9. SEC East                                Florida
  10. SEC East                                Kentucky
  11. SEC East                                South Carolina
  12. SEC East                                Tennessee

Forty-One additional div 1-a schools scheduled seven home games in a twelve game regular season.

  1. ACC Atlantic                  Clemson
  2. ACC Atlantic                  Florida                State
  3. ACC Atlantic                  North Carolina State
  4. ACC Atlantic                  Wake Forest
  5. ACC Coastal                   Duke
  6. ACC Coastal                   Georgia Tech
  7. ACC Coastal                   Miami-FL
  8. ACC Coastal                   North Carolina
  9. ACC Coastal                   Virginia
  10. Big East                                 Connecticut
  11. Big East                                 Rutgers
  12. Big East                                 South Florida
  13. Big East                                 Syracuse
  14. Big East                                 West Virginia
  15. Big Ten                                  Iowa
  16. Big Ten                                  Michigan State
  17. Big Ten                                  Minnesota
  18. Big Ten                                  Nebraska
  19. Big Ten                                  Ohio State
  20. Big Ten                                  Penn State
  21. Big Ten                                  Purdue
  22. Big Twelve N                             Kansas State
  23. Big Twelve N                             Kansas
  24. Big Twelve S                              Oklahoma
  25. div-a Independent                Brigham Young
  26. MAC East                        Temple*
  27. Mountain West                    Air Force*
  28. Mountain West                    Colorado State*
  29. Mountain West                    San Diego State*
  30. Mountain West                    Texas Christian*
  31. Pacific Twelve                   Arizona State
  32. Pacific Twelve                   Oregon State
  33. Pacific Twelve                   Stanford
  34. Pacific Twelve                   USC
  35. Pacific Twelve                   Washington
  36. SEC East                                Georgia
  37. SEC East                                Vanderbilt
  38. SEC West                      Alabama
  39. SEC West                      Arkansas
  40. SEC West                      Auburn
  41. SEC West                      Mississippi

Fifty-Three out of 120 div-a schools (44.17%) compete with an unfair advantage and you should note that only Temple, Air Force, Colorado State, San Diego State and Texas Christian are not in the Big Six conferences (automatic bowl bid).

At the other end of the spectrum is Colorado with five home games with a thirteen game reason season.  Tulane, Fresno State, and New Mexico State have six home games with a thirteen game regular season. )

Fifteen schools have five home games with a twelve game regular season.

  1. Conference USA E                 Alabama Birmingham
  2. Conference USA E                Marshall
  3. Conference USA W                Rice
  4. div 1-a Independent                Army
  5. MAC West                      Central Michigan
  6. MAC West                      Eastern Michigan
  7. MAC West                      Western Michigan
  8. Mountain West                   Nevada Las Vegas
  9. Pacific Twelve                   Washington State
  10. Sun Belt                                 Florida                Atlantic
  11. Sun Belt                                 Louisiana Lafayette
  12. Sun Belt                                 Louisiana Monroe
  13. Sun Belt                                 Troy Alabama
  14. Western Athletic                  Louisiana Tech
  15. Western Athletic                  San Jose State

None of these schools belong to a Big Six conference.

Let us admit it folks.  Div 1-a college football is as corrupt and hypocritical as national, state, and local politics.

Sincerely,

George Sarkisian
