The Home Field advantage in 2011 div 1-a college football.

The Home Field advantage in 2011 div 1-a college football.

September 23, 2011

Of the 207 games participated in by the 120 div 1-a football schools in weeks one through three of the 2011 regular season, fifty-five teams (out of the 414 involved=13.3%) scored seven or fewer points.

Twenty-four teams in week one

Fourteen teams in week two

Seventeen teams in week three

Thirteen of those fifty-five teams did not score a point.

Surprisingly, seven of those thirteen schools scoring zero points were div 1-a. (two in week one, three in week two, two in week three).

Twenty-seven of the fifty-five teams scoring seven or fewer points were div 1-a.

Eight of the twenty-seven teams are from the Mid-American Conference (both east and west).

Six of those teams are from the Sun Belt conference.

Once mighty Ohio State (of Rex Kern, Bruce Jankowski, Jim Otis, Jim Stillwagon, Archie Griffen fame) is the only Big Ten team scoring seven or fewer points, losing at equally once mighty Miami-FL 24-6 in week three.

Forty-nine of the fifty-five have been the road team.

Of the 207 games participated in by the 120 div 1-a football schools in the 2011 regular season, exactly one-hundred teams (out of the 414 involved=24.1%) scored forty or more points.

Two of those schools were div 1-aa.

Central Arkansas (Southland) lost at Louisiana Tech (Western Athletic) 48-42 in Overtime in week two.

Indiana State (Missouri Valley) won at Western Kentucky (Sun Belt) 44-16 in week three.

Defense seems to be less of a priority in div 1-a college football.

The home team lost only 45 of the 207 games (21.7%)

In week one, Louisiana State defeated Oregon 40-27 at neutral sight Dallas.

IN WEEK ONE, using a basis of 77 home/away games:  There were three overtime games.

9.29 points in the 1st quarter

11.05 points in the 2nd quarter

8.72 points in the 3rd quarter

3.81 points in the 1st quarter

3.81 points in the 2nd quarter

3.38 points in the 3rd quarter

In all three weeks, the home team scored more points (average) than the visiting team in all four quarters.

In all three weeks, the winning team scored more points (average) than the losing team in all four quarter.

Again, for div 1-a college football to be played on an even playing field, the huge schools in the Big Six conferences should NOT be permitted to schedule seven and eight home games.  The numbers say they have an advantage before the opening kickoff.

For example, Michigan has eight home games, including five straight to start the season including Western Michigan, Eastern Michigan and San Diego State, not one of which in is a Big Six conference.  HAIL TO THE VICTORS, but look the other way when you examine our schedule.

Michigan may win eight or nine games this year (or even more) and first year coach Brady Hoke will be in the running for coach of the year, but it will be a hollow and undeserved honor.

Of course, when you have people like Texas athletic director DeLoss Dodds involved, there is no such thing as an even playing field.  If the information is true, imagine going into a meeting with the Pac 12 athletic directors, asking to join their conference but not willing to offer revenue sharing on the $300 million longhorn network!  Everything grows bigger in Texas.
