Which div 1-a college football teams should
be allowed to play for the championship (whatever that is)?
November 23, 2011
I hate to keep harping on this but the
BCS (Broken, Corrupt, Scandalous) is just as disgusting an institution as anything we see coming out of Washington D.C.
During college football broadcasts, we
see public service announcements extolling the virtues of the two schools playing in that game. We have Nobel Prize winners, Rhode Scholars, astronauts, senators, presidents, inventors etc. We have 120 div 1-a football schools claiming to be the ultimate Boy Scout (trustworthy, loyal, helpful,
friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, reverent).
However, how many schools have we seen
become involved in scandals over the years? Penn State, Ohio State, Michigan
(all in the Big Ten), USC, Alabama, and SMU…the list goes on forever.
Urban Meyer jumps from Bowling Green to
Utah to Florida to potentially Ohio State. Do you think he will ever get votes
as coach of the year from the schools he left?
Nick Saban jumps from Toledo to Michigan
State to Louisiana State to the Miami Dolphins to Alabama. Do you think the people
in South Florida want him retiring there?
Bobby Petrino jumps from Louisville to
the Atlanta Falcons to Arkansas. The only way Bobby Petrino can ever step foot
in the city of Atlanta again is if Hank Aaron is standing by his side.
There are others to be sure, yet a kid
tries to sell his jersey for a couple of bucks and he is banned from the school forever, even though he helped put millions
of dollars in the bank account of the athletic department and the school.
If div 1-a college football really wanted
to teach young people about fair play, why are the following eight schools allowed to schedule eight home games over the course
of a twelve game regular season? Please note the SEC, Big Ten and Big Twelve
are the biggest offenders.

If div 1-a college football really wanted
to teach young people about fair play why are these additional forty-seven schools allowed to schedule seven home games over
the course of a twelve game regular season? In the Big Ten, only Indiana and
Northwestern play less than seven home games.

In addition, the following 93 div 1-a schools
scheduled 97 games against a div 1-aa opponent (some div 1-a schools played two div 1-aa opponents) yet the div 1-a school
is not penalized playing a supposed lesser opponent. Air Force, Eastern Michigan,
North Carolina State and Wyoming scheduled two div 1-aa opponents.

After you sort out all the schedule
manipulation, only twenty of the 120 div 1-a football schools should be allowed to play for the championship. Each of these schools scheduled six of fewer home games and did NOT schedule a div 1-aa opponent.
Any team, which schedules more than six
home games in a twelve game regular season, is gaining an unfair advantage.
Any div 1-a team, which schedules one or
more div 1-aa opponents in the twelve game regular season is gaining an unfair advantage.
In both of these situations, the div 1-a
team should incur a penalty. That penalty should be the forfeiture to play in
the championship game. Of course, given the fact that the BCS is broken, corrupt
and scandalous, it always comes down to who lines whose pocket with the most money.
