Dec. 17, 2011-Is the best college football played NORTH or SOUTH of the Mason-Dixon line?

Is the best college football played NORTH or SOUTH of the Mason-Dixon line?

Is the best college football played EAST or WEST of the Mississippi River?

December 17, 2011

If the NORTH played the SOUTH in a college football game during the United States Civil War, which side would have won?  I have no idea.

Let us divide the college football country on a NORTH and SOUTH basis using the Mason-Dixon Line, (which was the border between Pennsylvania and Maryland) and project it out from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean.  The 26 states in the NORTH (includes District of Columbia) would be:

Oregon, Idaho, Wyoming, Nebraska, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Washington, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, District of Columbia, Alaska

Let us also divide the country EAST and WEST with the Mississippi River as the line of demarcation.

There would be 27 states in the EAST (counting the District of Columbia) and 24 states in the WEST.

Div 1-a college football has 120 schools.

41 schools in the NORTH with a combined record of:

overall-259 wins and 238 losses (52.11%)

conference-154 wins and 156 losses (49.67%)

79 schools in the SOUTH with a combined record of:

overall-512 wins and 448 losses (53.33%)

conference-310 wins and 308 losses (50.16%)

66 schools in the EAST with a combined record of:

overall-411 wins and 389 losses (51.37%)

conference-237 wins and 261 losses (47.59%)

54 schools in the WEST with a combined record of:

overall-360 wins and 297 losses (54.79%)

conference-227 wins and 203 losses (52.79%)

30 schools in the NORTHEAST with a combined record of:

overall-188 wins and 176 losses (51.64%)

conference-110 wins and 110 losses (50.00%)

(Many schools in the BIG TEN and BIG EAST schedule div 1-aa teams in the first few weeks of the season which contributes to the positive overall record).

11 schools in the NORTHWEST with a combined record of:

overall-71 wins and  62 losses (53.38%)

conference-44 wins and 46 losses (48.88%)

(Boise State, Oregon and Nebraska contributed 31 of the overall wins.)

36 schools in the SOUTHEAST with a combined record of:

overall-223 wins and 213 losses (51.14%)

conference-127 wins and 151 losses (45.68%)

(Alabama, Georgia, Southern Mississippi, South Carolina, Clemson, and Virginia Tech all had 10 or more wins overall.  Most of the non-conference wins were against div 1-aa teams.)

43 schools in the SOUTHWEST with a combined record of:

overall-289 wins and 235 losses (55.15%)

conference-183 wins and 157 losses (53.82%)

(USC, Kansas State, Louisiana State, Oklahoma State, Texas Christian and Houston all had 10 or more wins overall. The 10 div 1-a schools based in Texas had 70 wins and 51 losses overall. (57.85%)

Div 1-aa college football has 126 schools.

53 schools in the NORTH with a combined record of:

overall-301 wins and 290 losses (50.93%)

conference-192 wins and 185 losses (50.92%)

73 schools in the SOUTH with a combined record of:

overall-393 wins and 425 losses (48.04%)

conference-264 wins and 271 losses (49.34%)

89 schools in the EAST with a combined record of:

overall-477 wins and 512 losses (48.23%)

conference-321 wins and 333 losses  (49.08%)

37 schools in the WEST with a combined record of:

overall-217 wins and 203 losses (51.66%)

conference-135 wins and 123 losses (52.32%)

42 schools in the NORTHEAST with a combined record of:

overall-215 wins and 247 losses (46.53%)

conference-137 wins and 160 losses (46.12%)

(The IVY League and Northeast Conference do not schedule games against div 1-a teams but most of the teams in the other conferences do.)

11 schools in the NORTHWEST with a combined record of:

overall-86 wins and 43 losses (66.67%)

conference-55 wins and 25 losses (68.75%)

47 schools in the SOUTHEAST with a combined record of:

overall-262 wins and 265 losses (49.71%)

conference- 184 wins and 173 losses (51.54%)

(The state of Florida has only 3 div 1-aa teams.  North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia have a combined 23 teams.)

26 schools in the SOUTHWEST with a combined record of:

overall-131 wins and 160 losses (45.01%)

conference-80 wins and 98 losses (40.81%)

(Many of these non-conference losses came at the expense of the div 1-a teams in the SEC, Big Twelve, and Pac Twelve.)

Combining the 246 schools of div 1-a and div 1-aa, we have:

90 schools in the NORTH

156 schools in the SOUTH

155 schools in the EAST

91 schools in the WEST

72 schools in the NORTHEAST

22 schools in the NORTHWEST

83 schools in the SOUTHEAST

69 schools in the SOUTHWEST

The states of Alaska and Vermont are the only states not having a div 1-a or div 1-aa college football school.
